At Marketplace Dental Excellence in Queen Creek, AZ, our practice provides care for concerns related to gingivitis, periodontitis, and other signs of periodontal disease.
What Is Periodontal Care?
Periodontal care focuses on the health of your gums and the tissues supporting your teeth. It is used to address gum disease, including gingivitis and periodontitis, and help maintain healthier gums over time. The type of periodontal care you need depends on the condition of your gums and the extent of the problem. Our dentist can determine the appropriate care based on your oral health needs.
Periodontal Care for Gum Disease
Periodontal care can address gum disease at different stages, from early gum inflammation to more advanced periodontal concerns. The type of care needed depends on the condition of your gums and the tissues supporting your teeth.
Gingivitis
Gingivitis is an early stage of gum disease that causes inflammation of the gums. Common signs include redness, swelling, and bleeding when brushing or flossing. Getting gingivitis treatment early can help manage the condition and reduce the risk of it progressing to more serious gum disease.
Periodontitis
Periodontitis is a more advanced form of periodontal disease that can affect the gums and tissues supporting your teeth. Signs may include persistent inflammation, gum recession, bleeding, or changes around the teeth. Professional periodontal treatment can help address the condition and support better long-term gum health.
Signs You May Need Periodontal Care
Gum disease can develop gradually, and early signs are not always easy to notice. If you notice ongoing changes in your gums, a professional evaluation can help determine whether periodontal care is needed.
Common signs of gum problems include:
- Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing
- Swollen or inflamed gums
- Gum tenderness or pain
- Gums that appear to be receding
- Ongoing gum inflammation or irritation
- Changes around the gums or teeth
These symptoms can be associated with gingivitis or other forms of gum disease. If you notice persistent symptoms, seeing a dentist can help determine the appropriate next step for your gum health.
What to Expect During Periodontal Care
Your periodontal care will be based on the condition of your gums and the tissues supporting your teeth. Our dentist will review your concerns and assess your gum health to determine what type of care may be appropriate.
After the evaluation, our dentist can explain the findings and discuss the recommended next steps. Depending on your needs, this may include treatment for gum disease or ongoing periodontal maintenance to monitor your gum health over time.
How We Evaluate Your Gum Health
A gum health evaluation helps our dentist assess the condition of your gums and the tissues around your teeth. We look for changes and signs that may indicate gum disease or other periodontal concerns.
01
Checking for Signs of Gum Disease
Our dentist looks for signs such as gum inflammation, bleeding, redness, recession, and other changes around the gums and teeth. These findings can help identify concerns that may need further periodontal care.
02
Evaluating Periodontal Pockets
Periodontal pockets are spaces that can develop between the gums and teeth when gum disease affects the supporting tissues. Checking these areas can help assess periodontal health and identify changes that may require professional treatment.
Can You Have Gum Disease Without Symptoms?
Yes. Gum disease does not always cause noticeable symptoms, especially in its early stages. Changes affecting the gums and tissues supporting your teeth may develop before you notice pain or other obvious signs.
Regular dental exams can help identify gum health concerns that may not be easy to notice on your own. If you have concerns about your gums or notice changes, our dentist can evaluate your gum health and determine whether periodontal care is needed.
Periodontal Treatment Options
The right approach to gum disease depends on the condition of your gums and the extent of the problem. After evaluating your gum health, our dentist can recommend the appropriate periodontal care to address the condition and support healthier gums.
Gingivitis Treatment
Gingivitis is an early form of gum disease that can cause redness, swelling, inflammation, and bleeding. Gingivitis treatment may include professional dental care along with guidance on brushing and cleaning between the teeth. Treating gingivitis early can help manage the condition and reduce the risk of it progressing to more advanced gum disease.
Periodontal Treatment
When gum disease progresses to periodontitis, professional periodontal treatment may be needed to address the condition and protect the tissues supporting the teeth. Our dentist can evaluate your periodontal health and discuss appropriate gum disease treatment based on the condition of your gums.
Periodontal Maintenance
Patients with ongoing or previously treated gum disease may benefit from periodontal maintenance. This ongoing care allows our dentist to monitor changes in gum health and provide continued periodontal care when needed.
Gingivitis vs. Periodontitis
Gingivitis and periodontitis are both forms of gum disease, but they differ in severity and how they affect the tissues around your teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can gum disease be reversed?
Early gum disease, such as gingivitis, can often be managed and reversed with appropriate treatment and improved daily oral care. More advanced periodontal disease may require ongoing professional care to manage the condition and protect gum health.
When should I see a dentist for gum disease?
You should see a dentist if you have ongoing bleeding, swelling, redness, tenderness, gum recession, or other changes around your gums. Early evaluation can help identify gum disease and determine whether periodontal care is needed.
How do I know if I have gum disease?
Common signs include bleeding gums, swollen or inflamed gums, gum tenderness, persistent irritation, and receding gums. Some gum problems may not cause noticeable symptoms, so regular dental visits can also help identify concerns early.
What are the stages of gum disease?
Gum disease can range from early gingivitis to more advanced periodontitis. Gingivitis affects the gums and causes inflammation, while periodontitis can affect the tissues supporting the teeth and may require ongoing periodontal treatment.
Can gum disease cause receding gums?
Yes, gum disease can be associated with gum recession. As periodontal disease affects the tissues around the teeth, the gums may pull away from the teeth and make them appear longer. If you notice receding gums, a dental evaluation can help determine the cause.

Update to my review from a while back. I started going myself last week. As someone who worked in dental for ten years and still has bad dental anxiety, Dr. Stone is great. I presented with tooth pain. Although he tried to convince me to save the tooth (as that is his job) he ultimately listened to what I wanted and took it out. The tooth gave him a challenge, but the entire time he kept me calm... made me laugh... and didnt make me feel bad when I needed breaks. I have full faith he will help me get my dental health back and in turn making me more confident in my smile. Highly recommend. My 6 year old daughter had her first dental appointment and cleaning today. I was a nervous wreck but the staff was so amazing and kept her calm (and I) calm. I did not get the technicians name that did her x-rays but the technician was so patient and calm and quick with her. Dr. Smith then came in and made my daughter feel so comfortable and helped her and us, as her parents, understand the areas she needed to work on. Cari the hygienist explained to my daughter what she was doing every step of the way so she wouldn't be scared and they even gave us an estimate for what we were looking at for the next 6 month appointment. Yasmira and the rest of the staff up front were so friendly and welcoming. Our visit overall was wonderful from start to finish. The office is very clean and cozy and feels like a home instead of dental office. Highly recommend for all your family needs!Posted on Google![]()

I had a root canal done, and I was very pleased with my treatment. Both the dentist and the dental hygienist were very very professional. I’ve been a person that’s always dreaded going to the dentist, but no more not at this office.. Everyone is extremely professional, courteous, and understandingPosted on Google![]()
